How To Secure Your Wireless Network

People have more flexible time due to wireless network. Thanks to the invention of wireless. People can now work from home while taking care of their kids or doing house works. No more stress from traffic jam anymore. Is this great?

Well, there is something you should realize. Working from home while using a wireless local area network (WLAN) may lead to theft of sensitive information and hacker or virus infiltration unless proper measures are taken. As WLANs send information over radio waves, someone with a receiver in your area could be picking up the transmission, thus gaining access to your computer. They could load viruses on to your laptop which could be transferred to the companys network when you go back to work.

Believe it or not! Up to 75 per cent of WLAN users do not have standard security features installed, while 20 per cent are left completely open as default configurations are not secured, but made for the users to have their network up and running ASAP. It is recommended that wireless router/access point setup be always done though a wired client.

You can setup your security by follow these steps:

1. Change default administrative password on wireless router/access point to a secured password.

2. Enable at least 128-bit WEP encryption on both card and access point. Change your WEP keys periodically. If equipment does not support at least 128-bit WEP encryption, consider replacing it. Although there are security issues with WEP, it represents minimum level of security, and it should be enabled.

3. Change the default SSID on your router/access point to a hard to guess name. Setup your computer device to connect to this SSID by default.

4. Setup router/access point not to broadcast the SSID. The same SSID needs to be setup on the client side manually. This feature may not be available on all equipment.

5. Block anonymous Internet requests or pings. On each computer having wireless network card, network connection properties should be configured to allow connection to Access Point Networks Only. Computer to Computer (peer to peer) Connection should not be allowed.

Enable MAC filtering. Deny association to wireless network for unspecified MAC addresses. Mac or Physical addresses are available through your computer device network connection setup and they are physically written on network cards. When adding new wireless cards / computer to the network, their MAC addresses should be registered with the router /access point. Network router should have firewall features enabled and demilitarized zone (DMZ) feature disabled.

All computers should have a properly configured personal firewall in addition to a hardware firewall. You should also update router/access point firmware when new versions become available. Locating router/access point away from strangers is also helpful so they cannot reset the router/access point to default settings. You can even try to locate router/access point in the middle of the building rather than near windows to limit signal coverage outside the building.

There is no guarantee of a full protection of your wireless network, but following these suggested tips can definitely lessen your risk of exposing to attackers aiming at insecure networks.

Windows 8 Update Notifier

Windows 8 Update Notifier:
With the release of Windows 8, quite a lot of things have changed along with the new start screen and other UI changes. One of the smaller change is that the Windows update notifications on desktop is no longer available. These notifications informed you of new updates available for your PC. You can choose the option “Check for updates but let me choose whether to download them” within the Windows Update Settings, but you will not be informed about new updates via a popup on the desktop (as it was in windows 7). Only on the logon screen you can see a hint in the bottom right corner.
Now if you are using a Windows 8 desktop, you can get back these notification on desktop with Windows 8 Update Notifier. It is a freeware and portable app which notifies you from the system tray on availability of updates.
Updates available
Although the application is developed for Windows 8 it also works on Windows 7 (but it is not necessary as Windows 7 offers this feature by itself).
Search updates
You can also manually check them from the system tray. There is also option to open the Windows Update control panel from the app.
Download Windows 8 Update Notifier

How To Change Your Mac Application Icons Easily and For Free

One of the aspects of the Mac that most users never even think about, is customization. This is in part Apple’s fault, since the main elements of OS X already come neatly organized and most of them have gorgeous graphics and icons. However, despite what many people think, OS X is highly customizable and allows users to change many of its elements.
Icons are of course, one of the design elements that every Mac user fancies changing every now and then. However, doing so usually requires you to buy applications like CandyBar, which makes the job super simple, but that comes at a high price.
Instead, let’s learn about a quite easy way to change the icon of any application on your Mac for free.
Here’s what you need to do.

Getting Your New Icon Ready

You can prepare your own icon files, but we’ll use a small piece of software to create ours, since it makes it extremely easy to do so and comes at no cost.
Step 1: Download and install the free version of Img2icns from this website. This is an app that allows you to turn any image into the .icns file required for this process. Once the installation is complete, open the app.

Important Note: Make sure the image file you plan to use is perfectly square. It is not required but will deliver better results.
Step 2: With the application open, take your image file (Img2icns supports all the popular formats) and drag it to the application’s main panel as shown in the image below. Then click on the Icns button to the right of the app’s window. A dialog box will appear prompting you to choose where to save your new icon.

Do so and the new file will be saved and ready to use.

Changing An Application’s Icon

Step 3: In your Applications folder, find the app you want to change the icon of, right-click on it and choose the Show Package Contents option.

Step 4: A series of folders will be revealed. From them, open the Contents folder and in it, head to the Resources folder. Open that one as well.

Step 5: Inside the Resources folder scroll until you find the icon file for the application. It will be a .icns file. Copy the name before the extension and use it to rename the icon file you created with Img2icns. It is required that the new icon file retains the original name in order for this to work.

Important Note: If at some point you would like to return to the old icon of the application, you should save a copy of the file before overwriting it.
Step 6: Once you are ready, simply drag the new icon file to the Resources folder and overwrite the original one. If you are required to introduce your user password, do so.

Step 7: In some cases the application icon will not change immediately. If this is the case for you, you might need to restart your Mac for the changes to take effect.
There you go. Now go and play with these icons!

Attach and send files upto 10GB in Gmail using Google Drive

Google has just announced that they will be adding a new feature for Gmail Users, you can attach files that are stored on your Google Drive.

Normally you can attach files upto 25 MB in size via Gmail, but the new Google Drive support will allow you to send files upto 10GB in size. Of course you need to have sufficient free space in Google Drive for making use of this feature. But I think it will be useful for users who use the 5GB free account too.

You will need to turn on sharing settings for the files that you are tying to send. If Gmail detects that the file isn’t shared with the recipients, it will allow you change the settings without leaving the email. The Gmail team have said that this will work like the forgotten attachment detector. You can also send the files by just pasting a Google Drive link in your email and it will work..

How to attach files using Google Drive in Gmail:

To use this feature you need to have Gmail’s new compose feature enabled. If you haven’t done so already, you can do it by clicking on the Compose button and clicking on the “Try out the new compose experience” button.

Please note that this feature is just rolling out and as yet may not be available to all Gmail users.

In the meanwhile, you can just paste the Google Drive link for the files you want to send in your email.

Thanks to Gmail Blog for the info and the image.

5 Tips to Save Battery when using Windows 8

When you are travelling, laptop or a tablet is one essential device which allows you to get connected to Internet or use it for your work. But one of the major hindrances in using laptop or tablets for work is the battery consumption especially when travelling. Many times, you might just run out of battery power in the middle of an important meeting or a long flight. Although most of the OS are optimized for battery usage, because of a variety of reasons the battery might just go out in a couple of hours. Similar to the previous version of Windows 7, Windows 8 is also optimized for battery usage. But there are many things a user can do to save battery consumption on your Windows 8 tablets or desktops.
Below are some of the easy tips you can follow to save battery on your Windows 8 tablets.

1. Power Plan- Choose the best one:

Windows 8 has by default two power plans, balanced and power saver. Sometimes OEM might have additional power plans based on the device you own. When you are travelling you can switch over to power saver. Apart from just switching to power saver mode, you can even customize the power save mode to get more juice out of your battery. You can even create a custom power plan based on your needs that save the power.
Change plan settings

2. Reduce Display Brightness:

Display is one the major battery consuming part on your PC. You can reduce it based on your requirements. To change the settings, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, then tap Settings. If youre using a mouse, point to the top-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, then click Settings. Tap or click Brightness to make the change you want. Some PCs also have a dedicated button to change the display brightness.

3. Change the time for sleep and dimming the display

When youre not using your laptop or tablet, even for brief periods of time, you can save power by having Windows dim and then turn off the display after a period of inactivity. This in turn can save lot of battery power. You can customize the power plan (mentioned in step 1) and reduce the time before the computer goes to sleep and also the time for dimming the display.
Edit power plans

4. Turn off or remove devices not in use:

You might have connected multiple USB devices like mobiles, pen drives etc. Many USB devices use power just by being connected, so you might want to unplug these devices when youre not using them. If you use a USB mouse, you can save power by replacing it with a touchpad or tablet pen.

5. Turn off PC cards and integrated wireless devices.

If you are not using wireless devices and PC cards, then you can probably think of turning them off. These devices also use power, so turn them off if you dont need them.
